About Us

Broken Shores is a collaboration between myself, Tom Dillon, and my friend Kevin.  We would write more about ourselves, but are too busy creating awesomeness from whole cloth–err . . . being modest.

About Broken Shores

Right now, most fantasy is either epic fantasy (think Lord of the Rings or A Song Of Ice And Fire) or urban fantasy (think True Blood or The Dresden Files).  Epic fantasy tends to deal with big issues.  Power, morals, war.  Urban fantasy tends to be centered around the notion that there is another reality existing in parallel or underneath the commonly experienced reality  Both of these sub-genres are valuable and worthwhile, but I want to do something different.  I want to make visible the relationships that bind societies together and I want to show a society that is struggling towards perfection and occasionally making progress.

First, I need to thank my awesome wife, Jennifer, and good friend, Kevin, both of whom have been instrumental in making this what it is, as well as providing indispensable feedback.  Also I would like to thank Heather, Jennifer Flood, and Richard Patrick for their excellent feedback.

As for influences, I would say that L.E. Modesitt Jr.’s Recluse Saga ranks pretty high on the list, as well as setting a standard for quality that I hope to achieve.  I have also drawn a lot from Azby Brown’s Just Enough, as well as Masanobu Fukuoka’s One Straw Revolution.
