Stories, New and Old

May 7th, 2013  |  Published in Site News

I know that I haven’t been too active on this site recently. Sorry about that. It has never been far from my mind, however, and I am about halfway through the first draft of the new Emera story. In other news, over at pawnstorm.net I just posted a (very) old first draft from a story that I wrote before the world of Broken Shores had really taken shape. The plan is to tear it down and rebuild it as an independent story within the Broken Shores world that I can hopefully sell or at the least use as a gateway into the series (I hope to have it explain everything you need to know about the world to understand how things work). I’ll keep things updated here as I make (glorious, glorious, speculative) progress.

Tragedy and Triumph

August 14th, 2012  |  Published in Site News

It has been, way, way too long in process, but I have finally posted a new Broken Shores story, Tragedy and Triumph. It is the third story about Kai (following Bound and Saw, Chisel, and Plane) and some of the larger plot elements that I have been thinking about from the very beginning are starting to come into play. If you haven’t read any of the stories in the series, you can start with this one, or you can start from the beginning (or anywhere in between).

As for why this story took so long, there are several reasons. Part of it is that I have been working on other stories (I have written three other rough drafts since I began), but the main reason is that I finished the rough draft of this, and sent it to my first reader, who in turn sent it back, saying that it was woefully incomplete. After a few more drafts, I have a story that I’m really proud of, and I hope you enjoy it, too.

The Ash Tree, Bound, and Induction now available for free on Smashwords!

The Ash Tree Bound Induction
After putting it off for several months, I have finally gotten around to putting the Broken Shores stories up on Smashwords (links on the cover images above). Or I’ve started, at least. I’ll add links in the stories themselves in the coming weeks, but in the meantime you should head over and grab a copy (and maybe leave a rating/review, too, if you’re feeling charitable).

The new Kai story has been delayed, sorry about that. I had a rough draft finished and sent out to my first readers, but their response was that it needed a lot of work. So I’ve been working on that. In the meantime, however, I’m also doing Short Story Writing Month (and it’s not too late to register, if you’re interested), which is currently taking up all of my time. With any luck, I hope to have something for you by the end of the month, but I’ll keep you posted. Thanks for your patience.

New Story Coming Soon

I’ve finished the rough draft for the next story, which centers on Kai. I should have it to you on the 17th or 24th of April.

The Forked Path

February 24th, 2012  |  Published in Site News

I have finally posted a new story, The Forked Path, which continues Danika’s story from The Root of All Things. I’m quite happy with it, and imagine that you will be, too.

In other news, you may have noticed that I changed the site layout so that the Stories page is now the primary page for this site. I think that it made more sense that way. I still have a few things that need tweaking, such as putting the titles back up on the various pages, but things are coming together. I also wrote a new introductory bit, and if you have any feedback on it, drop a line in the comments.

As for future stories, I’m already a good 1,000 words into the next one, so things should be smooth from here on out. In any case, I need to get to work, so enjoy!

Naming Schema

February 14th, 2012  |  Published in Site News

I’ve put the finishing touches on The Forked Path, and so once I hear back from my first readers, I’ll have it ready for you. What was the hold-up? When I was working on it, I realized that I hadn’t properly worked out how last names worked out. After some brainstorming and discussion, here’s what I came up with:

When the island of Ansau was created, the founders worried that family and tribal bonds would break apart the fledgling nation. The result was the creation of the Vaarplikt system. But if an individual was to be judged on their actions rather than their heritage, more change was necessary. The result was the naming system that is still in use to this day.

Names have two components: a prefix that denotes a profession and a suffix that denotes rank. Examples of prefixes include Traas (Council), Olan (Merchant), and Vidr (Auditor). The suffixes are: no suffix (Initiate), N/En (Apprentice),  A Journeyman), Ki/Aki (Master), Er/Or (Retired). So a Council clerk would be Traasen and a commander of the Auditors would be Vidraki.

The History page has been updated, with the new information under the Family Names heading.

Give it a week or two . . .

February 3rd, 2012  |  Published in Site News

This morning I did a second draft of The Forked Path, and while it still has a couple of minor bits that need work, I’m pretty happy with it. Once I fix those, I’ll send it out to my first readers, incorporate their feedback, and post it. With any luck I should have it ready for you a week from Tuesday.

In other news, I thought that I would lay out my goals for Broken Shores in 2012:

  1. Write more stories. My goal is to write six Broken Shores stories this year.
  2. Improve the site. I want to make the site more ‘sticky’, which means three things: improved navigation, some graphics, and more content (like character profiles and portraits). So expect to see more on that front in the next few months.
  3. Get it in print. My current running word count is around 34,000 words. Once I get a few more stories done, and get to a good breaking point, I will try and collect everything into an omnibus edition.

If you have anything else that you think I should be working on, let me know.

The Power Has Been Restored

January 25th, 2012  |  Published in Site News

Now back to work. I’ve been without power for the better part of six days, and haven’t been able to get much done, but it’s back now. I should have a rough draft of the new Danika story finished by the end of the week.

EDIT 11:20AM – The rough draft of the new Danika story is finished. It weighs in at around 4,000 words, and now has the working title of The Forked Path. There are definitely some things that need work, but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. I’ll let it ruminate for a few days and then begin work on edits. Thanks for your patience.

Status Update

January 3rd, 2012  |  Published in Site News

I’m mostly finished with my migration over to FatCow Hosting, which I am very happy with so far, but the crash and the holidays have thrown my writing off for a bit, so nothing new to report in that department. The new Danika story is my current top priority, however, so I expect to have a rough draft done in the next week or two. In addition, I hope to have  a new piece of flash done for you sometime this month. Until then.
